Biggest Challenge Facing Nurse Practitioners and How AANP Can Help
I believe NPs are going to be more needed in the healthcare landscape, as the physician shortage continues to grow. However, with states continuing to restrict the care NPs can provide, it will be difficult for us to help provide the essential care to our communities. The AANP has been a strong driver of the change to full practice authority for many states. However, we still have work to do to help make this change nationwide, which is what we are going to need to support our patients and our communities.
Describe, in detail, leadership and other professional skills that you will bring to AANP and provide at least one initiative or outcome that occurred because of these skills.
I have served in NP leadership roles for eight years. In my time, I have driven many initiatives to increase the utilization of NPs and allow practicing at top of scope. In one of my previous roles, I was able to partner with our local hospitals to provide NP coverage in our long-term care facilities. This increased the access to care for this vulnerable population and improved patient overall health and outcomes. This includes decreasing hospitalization, better control of chronic conditions, and earlier detection of acute health conditions for those patients. We also saw an increase in satisfaction with their healthcare among the residents of the facilities.
If Elected, I Propose to Advance the AANP Mission as Follows
I am currently working on ensuring that healthcare systems do not apply restrictions above the federal or state licensure requirements for our NPs. When we do this, it applies barriers to care for our patients. It is a passion of mine to be the voice of our NPs and advocate for top of scope and licensure practice nationwide. I believe that by removing these barriers, we will be able to meet the healthcare needs of our communities. I am also very passionate about EBP for all patients. I have been working within healthcare systems to provide education and resources for NPs to ensure they have access and the knowledge to EBP guidelines, which allows them to always be up to date on the guidelines and provide high quality care to patients.
