Biggest Challenge Facing Nurse Practitioners and How AANP Can Help

I believe the legal right to provide care and scope of practice for nurse practitioners will continue to be the biggest barrier to providing patient care to populations in need. Recent attacks from the AMA and other anti-NP groups show the need for our profession to continue to provide evidence of our value to the community at large. To do so, I believe we need to participate in political advocacy, broad educational campaigns, and research demonstrating our proficiency. We further need to partner with universities and national accreditation bodies to ensure the quality of new NP care provision is ensured. I believe AANP can be involved and lead initiatives in all these areas. Together we can continue to elevate the profession and provide the care needed by underserved populations.

Describe, in detail, leadership and other professional skills that you will bring to AANP and provide at least one initiative or outcome that occurred because of these skills.

I have over 20 years of experience as a nurse and over 18 years of experience as a nurse practitioner. Over that time, I have served in various leadership roles both through my employment and through volunteer activities. I have been a leader to a team of nurse practitioners at the regional and national levels. I have maintained positions as a board member on philanthropic and state professional NP organizations. I have coordinated student NP placements in the community and led the creation of an NP specialty education track. I am organized, able to speak to audiences with purpose and clarity, able to empower others, and able to identify initiatives to elevate the NP profession. One outcome that has occurred as a result of my skills was the attainment of a $4 million-dollar HRSA grant and another nearly $2 million-dollar HRSA grant both of which I co-authored. Through these activities, hundreds of advanced practice nursing students received financial support, interprofessional education, and specialty training, thus improving the NP workforce for underserved populations.

If Elected, I Propose to Advance the AANP Mission as Follows

If elected, I would use my role to communicate broadly with the members of AANP and recruit or evaluate individuals interested in leadership roles with the organization. I would make efforts to ensure we have a diverse group of candidates who are representative of our membership. I would seek to engage candidates who would bring a variety of innovative ideas to their various roles. I would communicate the benefits of running for a position and the call to action that each of us has in order to ensure the NP role remains a respected and critically important component of the healthcare workforce. I would represent AANP with dignity and ethical decision-making both within and external to my role.
