Bio Sketch

Dr. Sheri Rickman Patrick has 30 years of NP experience as an FNP across various specialties, including women's health, forensics, primary care, nuclear cardiology, and currently pediatrics. Her support of NP education spans over 25 years of precepting NP students and teaching in San Jose State University's NP program. Her leadership includes serving as the Northern California State Representative/ Liaison and later on the DEI committee. Dr. Patrick was inducted into AANP's Fellows Program at the last annual educational conference.

What do you think is the biggest challenge facing NPs in the delivery of health care over the next decade? How should AANP address this issue to support NPs and the populations they serve?

The biggest challenge facing NPs in terms of the delivery of health care is full practice authority (FPA). Physician organizations and other agencies are increasingly pushing back, creating barriers that hinder patients' access to timely, high-quality care. AANP could address the issue by engaging more state legislators, particularly those supportive of NP practice, to sponsor legislation that is better and more comprehensive, thereby removing barriers to patient access.

Describe, in detail, leadership and other professional skills that you will bring to AANP and provide at least one initiative or outcome that occurred because of these skills.

My leadership skills include active listening and communication, relationship building, teamwork, accountability, delegation, and problem-solving. These skills enabled me to effectively utilize them in my role as state membership chair of the California Association for Nurse Practitioners (CANP), doubling the organizational membership and introducing best practices that engage members. I was also a member of AANP s DEI committee, and I led webinars to increase visibility of the committee s work.

Identify one major challenge that could impact your ability to fulfill the responsibilities of the position you are seeking. How do you plan to manage this challenge to be successful?

One major challenge that could impact my ability would be my husband s health. We are dealing with his changing cognitive decline as he ages. However, with the assistance of family, our two daughters are available to step in if I need to travel for the position.

AANP’s mission is to empower all NPs to advance accessible, person-centered, equitable, high-quality health care for diverse communities through practice, education, advocacy, research, and leadership. If elected, how do you propose to advance AANP's mission and strategic plan?

Those elected offices must be representative of the diverse patient populations we serve. I propose recruiting members for the upcoming elected positions who represent the diverse communities NPs serve identifying those members who are improving the profession through practice, education, advocacy, research, and leadership.
