What do you think is the biggest challenge facing NPs in the delivery of health care over the next decade? How should AANP address this issue to support NPs and the populations they serve?
The most pressing challenge facing APRNs in the next decade is the persistent lack of full practice authority across all states, compounded by workforce shortages, burnout, and technological disruption. However, inconsistent Scope of Practice Laws continues to be among the most pressing issue. Many states still require physician oversight, limiting NPs' ability to practice independently despite their training and proven outcomes. AANP can be influential in supporting APRNs and the populations they serve through consistent advocacy for Full Practice Authority by intensifying lobbying efforts at the state and federal levels. Additionally, AANP can increase professional collaboration to support these efforts.
Describe, in detail, leadership and other professional skills that you will bring to AANP and provide at least one initiative or outcome that occurred because of these skills.
As an Assistant Professor and APRN, I bring a combination of academic leadership, clinical expertise, and interprofessional collaboration to this organization. My leadership style is grounded in transformational leadership, which emphasizes mentorship, innovation, and empowerment. I excel at identifying gaps in healthcare delivery and designing initiatives that address systemic challenges, especially in underserved populations. I have designed and implemented graduate-level coursework that integrates interprofessional education and evidence-based practice. Yearly, I participate in policy forums and have mentored students in legislative advocacy related to NP scope of practice.
Identify one major challenge that could impact your ability to fulfill the responsibilities of the position you are seeking. How do you plan to manage this challenge to be successful?
One major challenge that could impact my ability to fulfill the responsibilities of the position I m seeking within AANP is balancing time commitments between my academic role, clinical responsibilities, and professional service. As an Assistant Professor with a 12-month appointment, my schedule includes teaching, research, mentoring, and coarse coordination duties, which can be demanding and unpredictable. Additionally, I am a wife and mom of two children that compete athletically in multiple sports. However, I am structured, disciplined, and consistently work to prioritize my time for both professional and personal success.
AANP’s mission is to empower all NPs to advance accessible, person-centered, equitable, high-quality health care for diverse communities through practice, education, advocacy, research, and leadership. If elected, how do you propose to advance AANP's mission and strategic plan?
f elected, I will actively contribute to AANP s mission to empower APRNs in delivering accessible, person-centered, equitable, and high-quality health care through a multi-pronged approach rooted in practice, education, advocacy, research, and leadership. I am passionate about promoting full practice authority in restrictive state that I reside (AL) by collaborating with local NP organizations and legislators. I would continue to work to improve access to rural healthcare and reduce delays in treatment. Additionally, I would support emerging NP leaders in policy engagement and advocacy to impact the influence of health policy at local, state and national levels.
