State Liaison Candidate
Campaign Message
Aloha, I am Dr. Miki Miura, seeking a second term as State Liaison. Over the past year, I have had the chance to meet NPs from the state through conferences and meetings. My goal is to create opportunities for Hawaii NPs to network and collaborate across various specialties and islands, thereby strengthening our collective voice as NPs and enabling us to better serve our community. I thoroughly enjoyed my first term as a state liaison, and it has prepared me to serve you even better during this next term. Please support me in continuing this vital work for our community.
Bio Sketch
Dr. Miki Miura has over 18 years of experience as a clinician, mentor, and NP leader locally and internationally. She earned her BSN degrees in Japan and the U.S., gaining clinical experience in both countries before becoming an NP. Dr. Miura received her MSN and DNP from nursing programs in Hawaii. She has dedicated 11 years to women s healthcare and primary care. Dr. Miura is a passionate advocate for healthcare access in rural areas and among minority groups. She is a dedicated preceptor for NP students, mentoring them to become competent and confident clinicians. Additionally, she developed a preceptor training program for the state's first NP residency program. Dr. Miura serves as the Hawaii State Liaison for AANP and participates in conferences and meetings, connecting with NPs and programs across the state. She helped organize last year's NP Week Celebration, bringing together approximately 40 NPs, promoting collaboration and unity. Dr Miura is also a strong advocate for NP roles in policy. She has built a network of NP leaders and healthcare professionals to reduce barriers and expand care access. Her leadership earned her the 2024 AANP NP State Award and the Hawaii Association of Professional Nurse Leadership Award.
What do you think is the biggest challenge facing NPs in the delivery of health care over the next decade? How should AANP address this issue to support NPs and the populations they serve?
The biggest challenge is ensuring NPs receive adequate training to manage complex cases. The physician shortage is expected to worsen due to factors such as limited federal loans for medical students. NPs are a practical solution, helping improve healthcare with increasing numbers. NPs are well-prepared to manage complex cases safely and effectively, even in highly specialized fields, when provided proper training. The AANP should advocate for funding postgraduate programs for those who need them and continue to lead the efforts to expand NPs' scope of practice, which can help meet the community's needs.
Describe, in detail, leadership and other professional skills that you will bring to AANP and provide at least one initiative or outcome that occurred because of these skills.
I value grassroots leadership and believe that networking and collaboration among NPs improve solutions for our state and country. As the AANP Hawaii liaison, I connected with NPs across specialties through conferences, meetings, and engaging with NP students and faculty. This helped me host 40 NPs for last year s NP Week celebration, fostering collaboration and unity among state NPs. I also led NPs in Hawaii's acute care facilities to work with another state NP leader on developing acute care NP fellowship programs. I enjoyed serving as a state liaison and look forward to continuing my contributions.
Identify one major challenge that could impact your ability to fulfill the responsibilities of the position you are seeking. How do you plan to manage this challenge to be successful?
The biggest challenge in fulfilling my role as a state liaison is the limited time available to me. It can be challenging to dedicate sufficient time to the role while managing multiple responsibilities. However, during my past year serving as a state liaison, it hasn t been a major issue because I ve always enjoyed the role and made it a priority. I ve received great support in this crucial position from my colleagues and board members. I ve also built a strong network in my state over the past year, and I am confident I can serve more effectively in my second term.
AANP’s mission is to empower all NPs to advance accessible, person-centered, equitable, high-quality health care for diverse communities through practice, education, advocacy, research, and leadership. If elected, how do you propose to advance AANP's mission and strategic plan?
I plan to continue attending state policy meetings to advocate for NP roles and reduce barriers to NP practice, as I have been part of the Hawaii APRN Practice and Policy Committee and Healthcare Provider Barriers to Practice Law Review Task Force. I presented the qualifications and training of NPs for interprofessional collaboration education at a local medical school, and I will continue to seek such opportunities to enhance buy-in from other healthcare professionals regarding NPs roles and understanding. I also plan to approach local media during National NP Week to raise awareness of NPs qualifications and capabilities among Hawaii
