What do you think is the biggest challenge facing NPs in the delivery of health care over the next decade? How should AANP address this issue to support NPs and the populations they serve?
Misinformation and social media influencers are fueling the distrust and delivery of healthcare today. Over the next decade, if we do not continue to battle this along with payment and access reform through improvement of our workforce, the care of millions will continue to suffer. I feel AANP is cognizant of this distrust of the citizens and misinformation and has employed multiple avenues of education to NP's nationwide. I feel that continued promotion at the state level via AANP along with national continued focus on NP will be key
Describe, in detail, leadership and other professional skills that you will bring to AANP and provide at least one initiative or outcome that occurred because of these skills.
I feel that my interpersonal skills are one of my strengths that allow me to bring leadership to AANP as a state liaison. My experiences as an NP and primary care provider have allowed my knowledge base and networking to lead to many opportunities at the state and local levels to advance the profession, including my service on the Maine NP association board for many years. I was also honored to testify this past year as an AANP representative regarding a bill in committee affecting NP's.
Identify one major challenge that could impact your ability to fulfill the responsibilities of the position you are seeking. How do you plan to manage this challenge to be successful?
One major challenge I foresee this year would be my new business - I have opened my own practice with a partner, and the lack of revenue and guaranteed income may hinder my ability to travel as much, but I have already started saving to be allowed to attend not only National conference but also state events as well.
AANP’s mission is to empower all NPs to advance accessible, person-centered, equitable, high-quality health care for diverse communities through practice, education, advocacy, research, and leadership. If elected, how do you propose to advance AANP's mission and strategic plan?
I would like to start working to reduce misinformation while promoting the NP role through education sessions with the programs throughout Maine. With the large geographical area our state encompasses along with the primary care shortages we are seeing - student engagement will be critical for membership and reducing barriers to access. The disparity in healthcare access is profound in Maine, and by continuing to advocate for our patients together through these avenues, I feel we can improve the outcomes, aligning with the strategic plan.
